Getting To Cassino

Links to a variety of information about transportation in Italy can be found at http://www.mapsofworld.com/italy/transport-in-italy/

From ROME:

Intercontinental travelers will most likely fly into Rome Fiumicino airport (FCO). Taking a train or driving are the best ways to reach Cassino from Rome.

Leonardo Express Train: Airport to Rome TE. To get a train to Cassino from the Rome airport, you must first take a train from the airport to the Rome terminal (Roma Termini). After arriving at the airport, look for the railway to Rome (Roma Termini). It is 10 - 15 minutes walk from the arrival area to the station.

In the station there are automatic ticket machines or you can buy your ticket to Roma Termini and to your final destination at the ticket window. The trains from the airport run twice an hour (22 minutes and 52 minutes after the hour, as of this writing). The ones for Roma Termini are usually on the second platform. The trip from Fiumicino to Roma Termini takes half an hour.  The train you want is the Leonardo Express; its price (as of this writing) is 11€ each way.  ( Don't take the 5.50€  local train since it does not go to the station the Roma TE station; the train to Cassino leaves from the Rome TE station only.   The price of the ticket from Rome to Cassino is only 7.40 €.  You can find a full timetable with prices at http://www.ferroviedellostato.it/homepage_en.html .

Validating Your Train Ticket. Before your board the train to /from Cassino, place your ticket in one of the yellow validating machines.  Tickets may be purchased in advance but are good only for the day that you validate it. (I have read that the conductors do fine foreigners for forgetting to validate their tickets; acting ignorant of this policy doesn't help.)

If you have an early or late flight, instead of spending the night at an expensive hotel near the Rome Fiumicino airport, consider taking the train into (or from) Rome and stay at one of the inexpensive hotels/hostels near the train station.  http://www.hotelreservation.it/index_en.asp .  You likely will want a room with air conditioning located near "Termini". You can phone Hotel Reservation at +39 0669 910 00 or book a room (at a 3€  fee) at their train station booth.

From NAPLES:

You can also reach Cassino by train from the Naples airport. The connections by bus from the Airport to the railway station (piazza Garibaldi) are shown below.

If you are driving, Cassino can be reached by car from Toll Road A1, which connects Rome and Naples.  There is inexpensive pay parking at the conference site in the university parking lot.  However parking in the rest of Cassino can be challenging. And driving in Italy is not for the faint hearted.
